While I appreciated the drama and the performances, particularly from James Buckley, I felt that Finders Keepers portrayed detectorists in a negative light. As a responsible member of the metal detecting community, I find this representation challenging, especially given the ongoing struggle for recognition of our hobby. The acting was commendable, but the ethical dilemmas presented may not resonate well with those of us who take our responsibilities seriously. What ethical considerations do you think should be taken into account when it comes to treasure hunting and metal detecting?

Personal Thoughts & Favourites

For me, Detectorists is my number 1. To be honest, I think it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever watched regardless of the metal detecting theme. It captivates the UK detectorist personas perfectly. If you can’t find something to relate to in the show, I’d be very surprised. The balance of comedy and drama was perfect. If you’ve not watched it yet, you should.

Finders Keepers, I was in two minds about; I think that it portrayed detectorists in a bad light and we struggle enough as responsible detectorists. Lots of controversy here in the UK. I enjoyed the drama as a whole, thought the acting was fantastic especially as I’d only ever seen James Buckley in the Inbetweeners comedy. He did a grand job.

Some of the USA metal detecting shows, I enjoyed to begin with but found they became a little far-fetched and scripted so I lost interest after a season or two. I think also when you are from the UK, they are hard to relate to as detecting here is more history-based opposed to gold nuggets.

It’s all a matter of preference and if you’re not out metal detecting then what else have you got to do! If anything, they each inspire us to get up, grab the detector and head out on our own adventures.
