At 79 years old, Stan Ross is more than just your typical beachgoer at Newport Beach. Known as the “Metal Detector Man,” Ross has spent over 50 years using his metal detecting skills to help people find their lost treasures—everything from wedding rings to Cartier bracelets.
Ross, a retired electrician, spends up to 30 hours a week scanning beaches from Malibu to San Clemente, searching for items lost in the sand. With a background in treasure hunting and a passion for helping others, Ross has performed over 2,000 searches and recovered nearly 600 rings and other valuable items.
In 2012, he added his name to the Ring Findersdirectory, an online resource for people who have lost items and need professional help. His name now pops up whenever someone searches for lost items in Orange County. He’s even been called as far as Big Bear and the Mojave Desert to help recover lost jewelry.
One of his most memorable finds was a diamond-studded Cartier bracelet, which he recovered near Newport Pier after its owner had walked a long stretch of beach. Despite being told it was impossible to find, Ross located the bracelet buried under a pile of sand near the pier.
Though his finds are valuable, Ross doesn’t detect for money. He accepts gratuities or gas money but is more interested in the satisfaction of reuniting people with their lost items. His work has earned him a 5-star rating on Yelp and a reputation for dedication and kindness.
For those thinking about taking up metal detecting, Ross warns that it takes patience and experience. Most beginners don’t find more than a few dollars in coins, but with time, the rewards—both material and emotional—are well worth the effort.
Ross plans to continue metal detecting for as long as he’s able. “As long as I can stand and walk, I’ll keep at it,” he says.
